Squarespace or a managed mortgage website: pretty is not the hard part
Squarespace will give you a better looking site than most mortgage businesses currently have, and that is worth something. What it will not give you is the part that actually decides whether the site earns: a page for every program written at length, a profile for every originator with identifiers that stay correct, a city page that competes locally, an estimator on your own domain, and somebody publishing and updating it every week. Design is the part of a mortgage site that is easiest to buy. Structure and upkeep are the parts that get skipped.
The short answer
Right when the site is a beautiful brochure and will stay one; a managed plan is right when it has to earn inquiries rather than confirm you exist.

What Squarespace is, described fairly
Squarespace is a hosted, all-in-one platform with a strong reputation for design: the vendor runs the hosting and the software, and the templates are unusually well made, so a non-designer can produce something that looks considered. For a business whose site is essentially a beautiful brochure, that is an excellent fit and a genuinely nice tool to use.
Side by side, on the things a mortgage site is judged on
12 rows. Where we do not know something about the other option, we describe the category rather than inventing a detail.
| What is being compared | Squarespace | MortgageWebStudio |
|---|---|---|
| Visual quality out of the box | Very strong. This is its real advantage and we will not pretend otherwise. | Designed for this niche specifically, with one type scale and one accent carried across every page. |
| Depth of content | As deep as you are willing to write. | A page per program, written for a borrower, plus articles every week, included. |
| Per-originator structure | You build and maintain each profile by hand. | Profiles are a structure: identifiers, licensed states and apply links defined once and rendered consistently. |
| Local search | Possible, with pages you write and maintain yourself. | A page per branch city, built to be the document that ranks for it. |
| Page speed on a phone | Reasonable, and affected by imagery and embeds as the site grows. | Static pages, almost no JavaScript, held to the guaranteed floor after every update. |
| Structured data | Some is emitted. Anything beyond it is on you. | Generated from the visible content, validated, never hand-typed. |
| Answer engines and AI citation | Nothing is done for you. | Answer-first structure, visible FAQs, llms.txt and llms-full.txt maintained. |
| Compliance blocks | Placed by hand on every page, then kept matching by hand. | One definition rendered identically, changed once. |
| Estimator | A third-party embed, usually on the vendor's domain. | On your own pages, labeled as an estimate, every run captured as a lead. |
| Who does the work after launch | You. | Us, weekly, within a stated turnaround. |
| Cost model | A subscription, plus your time, plus anything embedded. | One monthly fee plus a one-time build fee invoiced after launch. |
| Portability | Hosted platform. Check your plan's export and domain terms. | Domain in your name, content exported on request. |
When Squarespace is the better buy
Choose it when the site is a beautiful brochure and it will stay that way.
- Your business is almost entirely referral and repeat, and the site exists to look credible when somebody checks.
- You enjoy design and will keep the site fresh yourself.
- You do not need per-originator structure because there is only you.
- Local search is not where your next deals come from.
- You want one low subscription and no other commitments.
When the site needs to do work rather than look right
Choose managed when the site has to earn inquiries rather than confirm you exist.
- You want program searches in your city to find pages you own.
- You have a team, and each originator needs a page that stays accurate.
- Your compliance team expects wording changed the same week they ask.
- You want the articles written, not just a place to publish them.
- You want the estimator keeping the lead instead of handing it to an embed vendor.
What clients say about the work
“Most of our visitors are on phones, so that is where I reviewed the new home loan consultations pages. Everything a visitor needs is up top, and the inquiry button stands out properly. It is far more practical than the old page when we share it with a caller.”
What they got: Mobile navigation and page layout for home loan consultations
“We approved the new home loan consultations form only after trying hard to break it. Each error is flagged precisely where it happens, and nothing already entered is lost. It behaves the way we assumed forms behaved, until we tested the old one.”
What they got: Form usability and error handling for home loan consultations
“If you only look at the design you miss the best bit, which is the inquiry form. It collects purchase or refinance goal, property state and callback time up front, so the back-and-forth we used to do by reply has largely gone. It has quietly removed the slowest step in our intake.”
What they got: Inquiry form and response workflow for home loan consultations
If the design is the part you love
Bring it. If your Squarespace site has a look you are attached to, the palette, the type feel and the photography all come across into the build, applied to a structure that can actually carry a mortgage business. What we will push back on is anything that costs page speed for decoration, and we will tell you exactly what the trade is rather than quietly dropping it.
Moving without losing the look or the links
Two exports matter: the URLs and the photography.
We capture every URL, title and description, and every image you own the rights to.
The single services page is split into a page per program, because that is usually where the traffic is being lost.
Each old URL gets one permanent redirect to its closest equivalent.
Photography is renamed, resized and converted so it stays sharp without slowing the page.
You and your compliance team approve on a private review link before the domain moves.
Questions about Squarespace
Our Squarespace site looks better than most mortgage sites. Is that not enough?
It is further ahead than most, and it is not enough on its own. A borrower deciding who to trust with the largest debt of their life reads before they call, and looking good does not answer what an FHA loan involves or which states you are licensed in. The sites that win in this niche look credible and then answer the question at length on a page built for it.
Can you match our current design?
We can carry the palette, the type feel and the photography, and build on them. We will not reproduce a template one for one, because part of what you are buying is a structure the template cannot hold. You see the design before launch and changes at that point are part of the build.
Will we lose our blog?
No. Posts worth keeping are rebuilt with their own structured data, byline and dates, and redirected from their old URLs. Posts that are thin or out of date we flag, and you decide.
What about our members area or shop?
Those are not part of these plans. If a commerce or membership feature is central to your business, keeping it where it is and linking to it may be the right answer, and we will say so rather than pretend otherwise.
How is your page speed different?
Every page is static, hand-coded and served from the edge with almost no JavaScript, and it is re-measured against the guaranteed floor after every weekly update. The difference borrowers notice is that the page is there when they tap, rather than after a spinner, which matters most on a phone in a car outside a listing.
Do we keep our domain?
Yes. If it is registered inside the platform we check that before the build starts and walk you through pointing or transferring it well before launch day.
Can we still edit pages ourselves?
No. You send revisions and we make them within the stated turnaround. If self-editing is the feature you most value, Squarespace is genuinely a better fit and we would rather you stayed there than paid us and resented it.
What does the first month look like?
One onboarding call, then the build. You review on a private link, your compliance team approves the disclosure block, the domain is pointed, and the one-time build fee is invoiced only after the site is live and you have approved it.
