WordPress or a managed mortgage website: what the ownership really costs
WordPress gives you genuine ownership and almost unlimited flexibility, and it hands you the maintenance in the same envelope. WordPress.org describes it as licensed under the GPLv2, with the freedom to run, study, modify and redistribute the software, and says it is the platform of choice for over 43 percent of all sites across the web. That freedom is real and it matters. The cost of it, on a mortgage site specifically, is that every plugin you add to reach feature parity is another thing that updates, breaks, slows the page down or stops being maintained.
The short answer
Right if you want to own the stack and have someone to run the updates; a managed plan is right if the maintenance is exactly what you are trying to stop doing.
- Plans$137 a month
- Build fee$797, after launch

What WordPress is, described fairly
WordPress is open-source software you install on hosting you control, licensed under the GPLv2. Nobody can switch it off, put your pages behind a plan change, or stop you exporting everything. It has the largest plugin and theme ecosystem of any web platform, which means whatever you want to add, somebody has built it. For a business that wants to own its stack outright, and has or hires the technical attention to run it, that combination is hard to beat.
Side by side, on the things a mortgage site is judged on
12 rows. Where we do not know something about the other option, we describe the category rather than inventing a detail.
| What is being compared | WordPress | MortgageWebStudio |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Total. Open-source software, your hosting, your database, your files. | Your domain and your content are yours and exported on request. The build and hosting are ours to run. |
| Flexibility | Effectively unlimited, through plugins, themes and code. | Anything within a fast, hand-coded mortgage site. We say no to things that would slow it down. |
| Speed on a phone | Achievable, and usually lost over time as plugins, page builders and scripts accumulate. | Static pages, almost no JavaScript, measured against the guaranteed floor after every weekly update. |
| Security and updates | Core, theme and plugin updates are yours to apply, test and roll back. This is the real ongoing job. | No plugins to update. Hosting, certificate, firewall, backups and monitoring are inside the fee. |
| Who does the work | You, a developer, or a maintenance retainer. | Us, weekly, within a stated revision turnaround. |
| Search control | Excellent, with the right plugin and someone who knows how to use it. | Built in: one target phrase per page, titles and descriptions per page, structured data generated from content. |
| Structured data | A plugin emits it. Keeping it matching the visible page is on you. | Generated from the content itself, so it cannot drift from what the page says. |
| Answer engines and AI citation | Possible. Nothing is done for you. | Answer-first structure, visible FAQ blocks, llms.txt and llms-full.txt maintained. |
| Compliance blocks | Usually a reusable block or widget, correct until somebody edits one page by hand. | One definition, rendered identically on every page, changed once. |
| Articles | The blog is excellent. Writing it is still your job. | Researched, cited articles every week, included in the plan. |
| Cost model | Hosting, plus premium plugins and themes, plus a developer or a maintenance retainer, each renewing separately. | One monthly fee covering everything, plus a one-time build fee invoiced after launch. |
| Risk when nobody is watching | An unpatched plugin on a site that takes borrower contact details is the scenario to avoid. | No plugin surface. The forms send to your systems and store nothing on the marketing site. |
When WordPress is the right answer
Choose it when you want to own the stack and you have the attention to run it.
- You have an in-house developer, or a retained agency you trust with updates and backups.
- You need something genuinely custom that a managed plan would refuse, such as a bespoke portal or an unusual integration.
- You already have a large, well-maintained WordPress site with years of content behind it.
- Owning the software outright is a principle for your business, not just a preference.
- You publish heavily and want full editorial control over the publishing workflow.
When the maintenance is the thing you are actually buying out of
Choose managed when nobody at your business wants to own a software update.
- Nobody at the branch is going to apply plugin updates, and everybody knows it.
- The current site is already slow because of what was bolted onto it over three years.
- You want compliance wording changed this week, not in the next maintenance window.
- You want the articles written as well as published.
- You would rather one predictable monthly figure than six renewals on six different dates.
What clients say about the work
“Everyone talks about the new design; I cared more about where the old home loan consultations links would land. They inventoried the old addresses and walked us through where each one would redirect. Launching no longer meant abandoning everyone holding an old link.”
What they got: Page migration and redirect mapping for home loan consultations
“Most of our visitors are on phones, so that is where I reviewed the new home loan consultations pages. Everything a visitor needs is up top, and the inquiry button stands out properly. It is far more practical than the old page when we share it with a caller.”
What they got: Mobile navigation and page layout for home loan consultations
“Converting our home loan consultations attachment into proper pages was overdue. Staff now link to the precise section instead of wishing callers luck with a long document. Callers have stopped apologizing for not being able to read it.”
What they got: Structured reference pages for home loan consultations
If you are keeping WordPress somewhere
Plenty of mortgage businesses keep a corporate WordPress site at head office and run branch or originator sites separately. That works, and the two do not have to look identical to feel like one business. What matters is that the identifiers, licensed states and disclosure wording match, and that the corporate site links to the branch sites rather than competing with them for the same city searches. We will happily take the wording and the link structure from whoever runs the corporate site.
Moving off WordPress without losing your rankings
A WordPress site that has been live for years is usually carrying more search value than its owner realizes.
We export every URL, title, description and published date before anything changes.
Posts and pages worth keeping are rebuilt as real pages, keeping their titles unless there is a reason to change them.
Every old URL gets one permanent redirect to its closest equivalent, never all to the home page.
Images come across renamed, resized and converted, with their alt text preserved.
The domain is pointed last, after you have approved the new site on a review link, and we watch index coverage afterwards.
Questions about WordPress
Is WordPress bad for SEO?
No. WordPress can rank extremely well, and a large share of the best-performing sites in any niche run on it. The problems people attribute to WordPress are almost always problems of maintenance and page weight: a page builder plus four plugins plus a slider plus three tracking scripts is slow on a phone regardless of the platform underneath. If you have someone keeping it lean, it is a fine choice.
Can I export my content if I leave you later?
Yes. On cancellation we provide an export of your content and your articles within 14 days, and your domain is in your name and transferred on request. You will not get a WordPress database, because your site was not built on WordPress, but you will get your words, your images and your structure.
What about the plugins we rely on?
Tell us on the onboarding call what each one does and we will tell you plainly how it is handled: built in, connected to the tool you already pay for, or not possible. Forms, calendars, CRM delivery, structured data, search settings, redirects and backups are all built in. A genuinely unusual plugin may be the reason you should stay on WordPress, and we will say so.
Who is responsible if the site gets hacked?
On a managed plan the hosting, certificate, firewall, backups and monitoring are ours, and the marketing site has no plugin surface and no database of borrower data to steal, because forms deliver into your systems rather than storing submissions on the site. On self-hosted WordPress that responsibility sits with you or whoever you pay to watch it.
We paid a lot for our current theme. Is that wasted?
The theme is, the content is not. Your copy, your program explanations, your team details and your articles all move. In practice most of the value in a mature mortgage site is in the words and the URL history, not in the theme.
Can you work on our existing WordPress site instead of replacing it?
No. We build and manage sites on our own stack, which is how the speed floor and the revision turnaround can be guaranteed. If keeping WordPress is the requirement, you want a WordPress maintenance retainer rather than us, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to buy.
How long does a migration take?
The build runs to the launch window for your plan, counted from the onboarding call, and the migration work happens inside that. Nothing is switched over until you have reviewed the new site and your compliance team has approved the disclosure block.
Will our URLs change?
Some will, and every one that does gets a permanent redirect. We prefer to keep a URL that already ranks exactly as it is, even when a tidier version exists, because tidiness is not worth a ranking.
